The First Two Weeks
The first 14 days are critical. Observe the glass every morning and evening.
- Foggy all day? Too much moisture. Open the lid for 12 hours.
- No condensation at all? Too dry. Give it a few sprays of distilled water.
- Light condensation morning/evening, clear during the day? Perfect balance.
The Cleanup Crew: Springtails
If you haven't already, introduce springtails (Collembola). These tiny, white micro-arthropods eat mold, decaying plant matter, and fungi. They are the essential janitors of a closed ecosystem and will prevent catastrophic mold blooms.
Pruning
In a healthy terrarium, plants will eventually outgrow their space. Use long, sterilized scissors to trim back overgrowth. This encourages bushier, denser growth rather than tall, leggy stems.
Troubleshooting Quick Guide
- White fuzzy mold: Normal in new builds. Springtails will eat it.
- Yellowing leaves: Often a sign of overwatering or root rot.
- Brown, crispy leaves: Underwatering or sunburn from direct light.
