The False Bottom (Drainage Layer)
Because glass vessels lack drainage holes, we must create a reservoir to keep standing water away from plant roots. This is called the false bottom.
- Gravel, Leca, or Pumice: A 1-2 inch layer at the very bottom.
- Mesh Barrier: A piece of fiberglass screen or activated carbon mesh prevents soil from falling into the drainage layer.
The Soil Mix
Standard potting soil is too dense and prone to compaction. You need an "ABG mix" (Atlanta Botanical Garden) or a similar airy, moisture-retaining substrate:
- Coco coir or peat moss (for moisture)
- Orchid bark (for structure)
- Perlite or pumice (for aeration)
- Sphagnum moss
- Activated charcoal (to filter impurities)
Choosing the Right Plants
You must select plants that love high humidity and tolerate low airflow. Avoid succulents, cacti, and plants that require dry periods.

- Fittonia (Nerve Plant)
- Polka Dot Plant
- Creeping Fig
- Various Ferns (e.g., Button Fern)
- Terrestrial Mosses (Cushion Moss, Haircap Moss)
